Rane mixers have been engrained in hip hop and turntablism culture since the early 90's, there's even a Rane mixer in the Smithsonian. The original Rane TTM 54 was designed in conjunction with turntablists, to create the best battle mixer possible and they've continued to consolidate that idea since; from building the first mixer to include Serato Scratch Live controls all the way up to 2015's flagship TTM57mkII. Having changed hands in 2016 we're about to see the first product releases from Rane under their new ownership. We recently got hands on with the hotly anticipated Seventy Two Serato DJ Mixer and the Twelve Motorized Serato DJ Control System and we can happily confirm that the familiar build quality and innovative ideas that we've come to expect from Rane are there.
The Seventy-Two Serato DJ Mixer is Rane's new flagship digital battle mixer. The first thing you may notice is the construction, this thing is battle ready (excuse the pun), a solid steel chassis, dual die-cast aluminium FX paddles and 3 of Rane's new Mag Three faders mean it's designed for heavy-duty usage. Along with the standard phono and line inputs the Seventy-Two features two USB ports so you can use two laptops simultaneously, making for easy hand-overs. The 4:3 full colour screen not only shows Serato's moving waveforms and their cue points, but also allows FX selection and interaction with touch FX. Speaking of FX, each deck has 8 MPC pads, with independent control per deck. These can control different elements in Serato, pad FX or fader FX.
The Twelve is Rane's vinyl/digital hybrid Serato control system. It's a motorised "turntable" that removes the aspect of a traditional tone-arm/needle setup, offering the feel of vinyl DJing with all the benefits of digital. It has a familiar turntable layout, can operate at 33 1/3 or 45 RPM platter speeds, has adjustable torque and a dual-resolution detented slider. But adds a multifunction touch strip with 8 hot cue triggers, 4 deck control buttons and USB/MIDI integration. Moreover it operates with 3600 ticks of platter resolution for seamless performance.
